B+ Mushrooms (and spores!)

Hello again! This is the second in what a series all about where the various phenotypes of magic mushrooms come from. Like I said in the “Golden Teacher Mushrooms (and spores!)” there is sometimes virtually no information out there, but sometimes there is, and heck, I’ll have fun finding out more either way about where B+ mushrooms originated.

So, where exactly does the B+ (and remember, it’s “Be Positive”, not “Bee Plus”) variant of the Psilocybe cubensis magic mushroom come from? Let’s try and find out:

Oh my fucking god this is another one (that’s 2/2 so far) that doesn’t seem to have any concrete evidence, but there’s some chat online about it so I’ll try and sum it up as best as I can. It is bizarre that there’s not more verified info about B+ mushrooms out there given how popular they are, but like I said before, I suppose the ones that came about before the mass adoption of the internet probably have had their origins (if indeed there were any) lost to time.

First theory: It’s claimed to be a cross between P cubensis and P azurescens. This seems unlikely as as far as I’m aware no-one else has managed to do that. It’s not impossible, but it’s improbable. It gets more confusing when the website I’ve found this information on claims that John W Allen, a prominent mycologist, says that some fella named Mr G purchased a print from a company named JLF Primary Materials (they were selling research chemicals and other stuff back in the olden days before being busted by the DEA), which was claimed to be this P cubensis / P azurescens hybrid, and was labelled B+. Mr G started growing them and then also at some point simply disappeared off the internet (likely due to being arrested).

It's got as much chance of being this Mr G as it has of any of what they've written being true

However, even after hours of searching, I can’t find any written record of any of this other than on that specific website (which, again, I’m not going to name as they haven’t bothered to source what they’re saying so it’s probably bunk), which would be really strange given that most of the stuff John Allen has written about is available somewhere online. Chalk this one down as a very slim maybe.

Second: Another website that can’t be arsed to source any of its wild claims are that “it originated in an area of Florida” yeah okay pal, didn’t they all? “The place where cubensis grow is where this cubensis grew”. Honestly, as low-effort as this shit is it’s most likely the right answer, as B+ mushrooms just don’t look like one of those high-maintenance bizarro crossbreeds, it’s a fairly standard looking P cubensis.

Someone else (again, no sources so no links to ’em) goes three layers deep and say that no-one knows, with it possibly being from Florida, possibly Southeast Asia, and possibly from some chaps in the Netherlands back in the 90’s.

Third: Roger Rabbit (not the Disney one, the mushroom cultivator one that posts a fair bit on the Shroomery), says that “names like Golden Teacher and B+, etc, are just names that somebody pulled out of their ass” and to be quite frank I’m starting to lean more towards that now than anything else. RR knows a fuck of a lot about the game of mushroom cultivation, and I’m more inclined to believe what he’s got to say than any of these sites just are just using AI to pump out blog posts full of lies.

This is actually turning out to be quite a frustrating thing to write because there’s much authoritative sounding AI written bits on mushroom websites and no-one’s able to source a single one of their claims (because AI’s pulled it out of it’s ass, to paraphrase RR), so that’s about where this one ends.

Jesus Fuckin' Christ this has been irritating

Next time I’m gonna do one of the madder ones with a clear and definitive backstory so I can actually get my teeth into reading some cool accounts of mad science as that sounds more like fun to me.

Fun little Easter Egg for you if you’ve bothered to read this far: I’m probably going to be starting a YouTube cooking channel wearing all the Orangutan get-up, just because I think it’ll be a laugh and I do love a bit of cooking. Been trying to master smashburgers lately (making the balls, the pickles, the sauce, and the buns myself) as I have only ever had two good ones when I’ve been out (Beefy Boys in second place, Fat Mondays in first) and most places seem to have completely misunderstood the “smash” part of the whole equation. Might never get this idea off the ground but I’d like to, so hey, that’s some top-secret info for ya right there.

If you'd like to buy some B+ spores to have a little look at under your microscope, then you're at the right place, because I sell them right over here, along with a whole range of other Psilocybe Cubensis spores, and some other types as well like your P Ovoids and suchlike!

All the best, my dudes. OTC
